The President and the Executive Director of the Spanish Agency for the Food Safety and Nutrition today visited the Mercadona premises in the town of Ciempozuelos (Madrid). Roberto Sabrido and Ana Troncoso were accompanied by Luis Pla, Quality Director, Ignacio Magarzo, Director of ASEDAS (Association of Spanish supermarkets and convenience stores), José Ignacio Arranz, Director of the ForoInteralimentario and representatives from the distribution platform based in the town of Ciempozuelos (Madrid).

Opened in December 2007, this distribution centre represented a 300 million euro investment for Mercadona. It covers an area of 200,000 square metres, and employs some 600 people.

Members of the delegation were able to see for themselves the highly advanced facilities, which combine commercial innovations in storage and traceability with the very latest technology. Its high degree of automation allows for the preparation of 20,000 pallets per day. Special attention was paid to working conditions for employees, since the operation of the various techniques being developed at this site depends on IT tools which minimise physical requirements.

Mercadona is clearly committed to innovation, technological development and the further training of its employees. It is also worth mentioning that it has a crèche available for the children of employees, which is extremely well-staffed.
