Trinidad Jiménez visits the National Food Centre (CNA)

The Minister for Health and Social Policy today visited the National Food Centre, located in Majadahona and which is attached to the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition.

During the visit she was accompanied by the Roberto Sabrido, AESAN President, Ana Troncoso, Executive Director of AESAN and Fernando Tóvar, Director of the CNA.

The Minister visited the facilities, paying great attention to the work being carried out in each of the centre’s departments.

She thanked the Director and his staff for allowing her to see at first hand the work they do. She pointed out that it is with good reason that staff are highly qualified and trained in the diagnostic and analytical techniques applicable in their area of expertise, the control of food products.

The CNA, which is the National Reference Laboratory, carries out continuous research studies into samples destined for the consumer, in order to detect the various dangers in foods by evaluating the presence of possible organic or inorganic contaminants, as well as biological agents.

One of the studies currently underway is that known as Total Diet, which is specifically designed to establish, via chemical analysis, the intake of contaminants or other substances from food which a person consumes in a typical diet.

Last year more than 10,000 test reports were issued, all of them via accredited and internationally accepted procedures, following the analysis of over 2,500 samples.
