EFSA assesses the safety of steviol glycosides20/04/2010
The EFSA Panel on Food Additives has assessed the safety of steviol glycosides, a sweetener which is extracted from the leaves of the stevia plant. The report has been sent to the European Commission, which will consider whether or not to authorise the substance for its intended use in the EU.
Toxicological analyses show these substances to be neither genotoxic or carcinogenic, and nor are they associated with adverse effects in the human reproductive system or in child development.
The Panel established an Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) for steviol glycosides of 4 mg/kg bw/day, which is in line with that already established by the FAO/WHO Committee on Food Additives.
El Panel ha establecido una Ingesta Diaria Admisible para los glicósidos de esteviol de 4 mg por kilogramo de peso corporal, que coincide con el ya establecido por el Comité de aditivos FAO/OMS.
