Better Training for Safer Food is a European Commission initiative based on the provision of training courses on Community legislation referred to food and feed, public health and animal health and welfare. These courses are fully funded by the European Commission, and designed for all staff of competent authorities of Member States (MS) involved in official control activities so as to ensure that controls are carried out in a more uniform, objective and adequate manner in all Member States. The legal framework for this initiative is provided by Article 51 of Regulation (EC) No 882/2004 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 29 April 2004 on official controls performed to ensure the verification of compliance with feed and food law, animal health and animal welfare rules.

The Spanish Food Safety and Nutrition Agency (AESAN) is the national contact point that ensures the exchange of information with the European Commission regarding this initiative, providing the necessary coordination with the Directorate-General for Public Health and Foreign Health of the Ministry of Health, Social Policy and Equality of Spain through the Deputy Directorate-General for Foreign Health, and with the Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs through the Deputy Directorate-General of Farming and Traceability Systems for Agriculture and Livestock Resources.
