Food labelling is the main means of communication between food producers and end consumers, constituting a key tool to enable them to make informed choices on the food they buy and eat.

Labelling is deemed to be all mention, indications, manufacturer's or commercial logos, drawings or signs relating to a food product and appearing on any container, document, lettering, label, band or collar accompanying or describing a food product.

Rules are established at national and EU level to regulate both the layout of the label that all food must have in general, plus the specific ones regulating certain types of food (genetically modified organisms, novel food, food subject to special requirements for sale in the European Union, etc.)
